Pike School

The Pike School seeks to develop within its community a lifelong love of learning, respect for others, the joy of physical activity, and a creative spirit.
A Pike education is a journey that prepares students to be independent learners and responsible citizens.

We believe the potential within each of us deserves to be recognized and nurtured.

We believe children develop best when there is an active and willing partnership between school and family.

We believe that adults are important role models, guides, and mentors for children.

We believe the connections among teachers and students are most effective in small group settings.

We believe our curriculum teaches skills and strategies that foster the acquisition of knowledge, critical thinking, and creative problem solving.

We believe that an enriching, challenging, and supportive environment is necessary for personal development.

We believe that by recognizing, respecting, sharing, and appreciating our similarities and differences, we grow and flourish.

We believe that for children to become responsible global citizens, we must teach sound environmental stewardship of our earth and its resources.

Austin Prep opened a Middle School Program in September of 1987 in order to extend our services to a wider population. The School further expanded in 1992 by offering admission to young women for the first time in the school’s history. Today, the School enrolls just over 700 students in almost an equal split between young men and young women. Of this number we enroll 200 students in the Middle School and 500 in the Upper School. Our student body is geographically diverse, coming to us from over 55 cities and towns in Northeastern Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire.

Austin offers a rigorous liberal arts curriculum, with low student-teacher ratios, flexible course placement and a unique Phase System which looks at students academic abilities and places them accordingly in the college-preparatory program. We strive always to challenge our students to perform at their highest ability level while offering strong academic support and instruction both in and out of the classrooms. We consider our parents to be full partners in this important enterprise, and we are proud of the family tradition at Austin, which is manifested and nurtured by an increasing number of legacy enrollments, including siblings, cousins and sons and daughters of our alumni.

Many of our participants tell us that a summer of intense study coupled with beautiful surroundings, inspiring trips off campus, and the inevitable friendships that form over the course of five weeks were pivotal in their lives as students. Seeing the world from different perspectives and being challenged by teachers who care deeply about teaching the whole student are the hallmarks of this program, now in its 72nd season. What’s most important, though, is that you and your parents make the right choice about applying to a program that fits your needs. Take some time to look at Andover’s selection of courses, activities, and residential life expectations. We know that much of what is expected of you can seem very challenging. Ask others who have attended Andover Summer Session what their experience has been. If you are up to the challenge, we invite you to apply.
